INDIANA ARMY NATIONAL GUARD FIELD MAINTENANCE SHOP NO. 8
The new Indiana Army National Guard Field Maintenance Shop No. 8 replaces a 56-year-old outdated and undersized facility located in Brazil, Indiana. The new facility is located on 25 acres of former farm land adjacent to the Indiana Air National Guard just east of the Terre Haute International Airport. Affectionately referred to as a “Jiffy Lube on steroids”, the new Field Maintenance Shop is designed to enhance the maintenance support and mobilization readiness for assigned military vehicles, through reduced repair time and accommodation of state-of-the-art equipment. Being located in close proximity to an airport runway, the facility is designed to comply with FAA regulations in addition to Army National Guard Design Guidelines and Department of Defense Antiterrorism Standards.
The 29,654 square foot floor plan facilitates efficient circulation for both military personnel and vehicles. The plan is organized in three interrelated zones: administrative, support and work bay. The zones are connected by a U-shaped corridor system that places rooms that don’t require natural light or exterior access such as restrooms, showers, lockers and tool storage in the center of the building. Generous expanses of glazing at various points throughout the corridor open up the interior providing abundant daylighting and views. Large windows at the physical fitness area enable borrowed light to fill the area while offering multiple views to the exterior. The five drive-thru work bays are located side by side in order to allow the most flexible positioning of the 15-ton overhead crane. The offices, classroom and break area are situated to maximize exposure to natural light and take on a gentle curved shape lending emphasis to the main entry and enabling the creation of two intimately scaled courtyards that provide outdoor dining and break-out space for building users.
The facility is pursuing LEED certification and includes many sustainable design features. These include high-efficiency water source heat pumps and gas-fired boiler utilizing a geothermal well system and energy recovery unit, low flow sensor operated plumbing fixtures, LED dark sky cut-off exterior light fixtures, and high efficiency interior light fixtures with motion-sensor controls.
